Pécs was the “Cultural Capital of Europe” in 2010, and this project gives an excellent opportunity to emphasize certain subjects, like exchange of ideas between different European regions concerning health related problems and activities, also by utilizing the results of the WHO “Healthy Cities” movement.
Pécs – a city of Mediterranean impressions (http://en.pecs.hu/, http://www.pecs2010.hu/):
The historical roots of the city go back to the prehistoric times, when man found a living area, near the Mecsek hill. The multicultural characteristic of Pécs is highly influenced by its history: it was called Sopianae – during the Roman times, about 2000 years ago, and the Turkish period left also characteristic traces on the city. The “Cultural Capital of Europe 2010” title is an obligation: the visitors can choose between a huge variety of cultural programs, concerts, festivals and joint events. Pécs is also a very good starting point for making excursions to the surrounding ares, like for example the famous Villány region with its traditional top quality Hungarian red wines.
